Blank Slate

A new year.
A blank canvas.
What will you choose to put on it?
Your choice of colors.
Your choice of medium.
Each brushstroke adds to the final design.

Today, my daughter helped me make white cupcakes.  Later, we made strawberry frosting from scratch.  That doesn’t happen often in our house.  Frosting out of a can is the norm.

 Making it ourselves takes more time and involves doing more dishes.
I prefer zero time and no mess.

But, memories are sometimes born in the messes.    And time is only ours for the moment.
Today, I chose homemade frosting.

Sometimes we have to simply drop what we’re doing and join the moment as it happens.

Last week, one of my children ran into the house, so, urging me to get my camera and come quickly.  In the excited flow of words, I caught something about a big white cloud.

I followed her outside and, sure enough, there was a gorgeous cloud and a beautiful pink sky to go along with it. It just made you want to take a deep breath and savor the beauty.

So we did.

The whole sky was beautiful.  So, we started walking and noticing different views around each corner.  I snapped pictures along the way.  We walked to the end of the street and turned a corner to see a vivid orange and pink sunset.

I’m so glad they came to show me.

And I’m so glad I joined them.

Blurry photo

A lot of my days look just like this picture — one long 15 hour blur

There are beautiful moments hidden underneath the blur. But, I have to stop and notice them before they pass by unappreciated.

Today, I’m unwrapping the gift of seeing with open eyes.

I will stop what I am doing when someone needs me, look into their eyes, and listen.

I wil close my eyes and listen to the songs of the birds.

I will go for a walk and take pictures of His handiwork.

I will take a few minutes and join in with my kids in their silly play.

I’m guessing that even in a very busy day, there will be ample moments of joy, peace, and grace.  Moments that will be savored and enjoyed.

Moments that I will notice because I stopped to see them.

spring flowers

The sun was out today.  Like these flowers, I was soaking in its warmth.

As I was backing out of the driveway in the drizzly rain, something caught my attention.   A spider web, glistening with rain droplets, was nestled in the bush in front of our house.    In the midst of the dreary, unending rain, something beautiful had been created.

It took me by surprise.

There are those times in our lives when it seems as if the rainy season is lasting forever.   It seems as if the sun will never come out again.   What we often are unable to see is the thing of beauty that is being created in our lives as a result of the rain we are living in.

I never would have seen that little spider’s web had it not been for the rain droplets which illuminated it.

What things of beauty can you see in your life today that were the result of a long stretch in the rain?

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

II Corinthians 4:17-18

columbine in blue

I lift up my eyes to the hills —
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip–
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you–
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm–
he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121
